Description REALISTIC REVOLUTIONARY – CIVIL WAR HAND GRENADE / PIRATE BOMB REPLICA SET A pair (2) handcrafted of realistic theatrical replicas of typical iron hand thrown grenades commonly used in warfare on land and sea from the late 1600s through the birth of the industrial age in the mid 1800s.   American Naval hero John Paul Jones had his sailors rain grenades down on their British adversary after rebuffing the British Captain’s suggesting that he surrender with the now legendary reply, “I have not yet begun to fight.”  It was the hand grenade, not the cannonball, that won the fight. Original grenades from this period were simply hollow cast iron balls, varying from peach to grapefruit size, with a hole to fill them with black powder, sealed with a wooden plug drilled for a simple, match lit, fuze.   The basic design (round black ball with fuze) was in use so long it carried on in symbolic form to the present day where it is still seen in cartoons.  Grenades used in the Americas were typically between 2-1/2” and 3-1/2”.  In fact, the term “Grenadier” originally referred to a soldier, chosen from the biggest and strongest, who would carry and throw the heavy and powerful grenades in battle. These reproductions are made of  lightweight plastic rather than iron and weigh about 1-1/2 oz. so your would have to work pretty hard to hurt yourself with them.  That being said, be careful not to hit someone in the eye when you throw them or set something on fire if you light the twisted waxed fuse.  Ideal for cosplay or theatrical use because they are so light. If you desire a more realistic weight, remove the wood plug, carve out some of the foam inside with a thin knife and fill with lead shot and sand.  Sold in pairs.
